Strigear vehicles can operate satisfactorily with an automated conventional gear box. SPAB has made a size design of a Strigear using a conventional MT gear box with two actuators. Using a SAAB 9-3 chassis, a GM F 40 6-speed MT gear box and a four cylinder VW 1.4 litre aspirated direct injection engine, there is sufficient space between engine and the gear box for two electric motors and a one way clutch assembly. Gear shifts can be made rapidly as two electric motors can be used in the same manner as servo motors to quickly change the speed of the engine and the gear box input shaft to the forthcoming gear.SSMT
A Servo Synchronized Manual Transmission (SSMT) can give higher performance and lower total cost. An SSMT works without synchronization rings in the gear box. It uses the two electric machines and the one way clutch to quickly disable the tensions in the elastic elements of the transmission, perform the gear shift and thereafter restore the tensions of the elastic elements to values that keeps the acceleration after the gear shift at a value very close to that before the gear shift. The time without torque on the wheels is some 70 ms, which is said to be unnoticeable for the driver and passengers. SPAB has made a preliminary design of a SSMT. It is designed to fit in the space used by normal “manual” or automatic transmissions. Total length is 375 mm with an input to differential distance of 215 mm. Dry weight is 77 kg.
